Alfic Kohn

Criticism

-The site is very colorful which I really like because it becomes appealing to the eye right away.

-There are a lot of articles provided which makes it a good resource site if someone is doing a research paper.

-I read the article "On Punishment for Bullying-and Punishment as Bullying", his writing was clear and easy to read. I really like that he cited supporting details from other sources because it shows that he did in fact research this topic.

-I did not agree with some of his views on the bullying article. Kohn was arguing that punishing students who bully will essentially do nothing but make things worse in the end. I disagree, I think that punishment is a necessary tool to learning and if used correctly it can have large significant results. Through punishment students are taught the value of having good morals, impact of actions and it instills discipline into the person's character. Everything has its limits, so with that said, every punishment should vary and should be explained with and to the student so that he/she can understand why he/she is experiencing it.

-I do agree with his views on competition. I do believe that competition causes more harm than good to our students' self esteem. At the end of the day we are all people and we live on one Earth. We should help each other and progress together so that we can continue to have flourishing societies everywhere.

-In terms of grading, I agree and I disagree with him at the same time. Grading is important because it trains students to understand that they must put good quality work effort into their assignments but it is the teacher's job to help the students comprehend that they are not in school only to get passing grades. We are in school to learn and gain skills that we will eventually use to achieve our future career goals. Teachers have to explain the bigger picture when it comes to education because the students have to learn how to think outside of the box.
