Advantages

Makes them eager to answer questions

Participation increases

Helps built confidence

gives the students options

the students develop a sense of fulfillment from earning point or etc.

Disadvantages

Can overwhelm students

Come off as intimidating

Can confuse students with the task rules were not explained clearly enough

Puts pressure on the students to answer correctly

Makes students feel nervous

1. Why are these topics appropriate for an essentialist classroom?

Because it is learning about basic skills, this is an early elementary class

1. What are the dangers inherent in any essentialist approach?

It's important not to let the same student answer for the group every single time or pick the same group of students to answer questions. Everyone needs to participate and everyone needs to have a chance to answer at least once. 

1. What changes could have been done to transform this activity into a constructivist one?

Students could work on the task alone instead of being in a group and they can get individually assessed.
