Chapter 1 Questions
1) Common sense media can help students to keep up on forming new skills during their summer break, students are able to research all sorts of topic including the one on how to properly use media on school assignments and how not to use it. Lastly, it gives students the opportunity to work with animations, incorporate music and play games with academic tools.
2) On page 12 in our Etext, it explains that some students do not have the necessary skills to acquire or be able to work with the high quality course that online learning is offering. Teachers have to make sure that they are responsible in terms of how to properly use technological equipment in the classroom. The goal is to aid the students, not to confuse them. There is also the fear of not having enough funds of providing the necessary technological equipment to keep up with the rest of the societal standards.
3) Face to face learning is important and it should never be replaced. However, online learning is beneficial to students too so it should be combined with face to face learning. On page 19 of our Etext, the Tech-Pack Framework illustrates how several knowledge components worth together rather than separately. Those three contents are: Technological Knowledge, Pedagogical Knowledge, and Content Knowledge. Through the use of technology, we can see how these three contents connect and teachers can use this framework to come up with more effective lesson plans.
4) A. According to Edutopia, online learning can offer students guided steps on how to effectively analyze which information is best for their goals and analyze the validity of the information. As an upcoming history professor, it is very important for me to teach my students to know how to research and pick unbiased information when making an argument about a historical event. We have to base our supporting details from reliable sources that provide facts rather than biased opinions. The students have to learn the difference and they will also need to learn how to organize their information so that they'll know what to do with it for future projects.
B. The video that I watched is called
Integrated Learning: Broadcasting and Social Studies
In this video, it explains that collaboration is the key to making high tech work for students. Teachers can meet to come up with plans on how they can encourages vocational and academic strategies in the classroom. Topics include anywhere from architecture, engineering, culinary arts, graphic design, film/video, science research, theater, or dance. What is really cool about this video is that the school built a social studies on the radio program that allows the school to listen and learn about all sorts of unique methods of collaboration. According to the host of the video "Instructional days are filled with discussion about the content, which helps students engage in good conversation and think about what they may want to discuss on the air".
5) On page 22 of our Etext, it explains that technology can be used to engage students and implement strategies that address problem solving situations. Blending technology with face to face learning will produce better results in the classroom. Students will develop a better understanding of the content which will improve their comprehension skills.
6) On page 23 of our Etext, there is a list of how technology use has supported and provided positive effects on student learning in many different ways. Such as: Supporting effective skill practice, Visualizing underlying concepts in unfamiliar or abstract topics, Studying systems in unique ways, Giving access to unique information, etc. This proves that technology can help students develop more academic skills by developing an open mind as they get older.
7) It is tempting for students to plagiarize work because access to information is granted so much easier now a days that it ever has before. Although it is a concern that needs to be dealt with from time to time, there are other elements of technology that peak a student's interest. Technology shows us how to network through the internet, how to find interesting videos or videos with instructions when we're confused and don't know how to go about something, look at illustrations of places we've never been to before, save money on materials, turn disabilities into capabilities, etc. (Pg. 24).
