Response to "Learning to Change Changing to Learn"

The video pointed out various different reasons why it is important to use technology in the classroom and not shut it out. Students learn a lot from using the internet whether we like it or not so rather than having them learn the wrong things on their own, we should incorporate the internet in the class and show them how to use it productively. The kids are accustomed to using the social media to communicate all the time and there is no way of holding them back from it. We have to accept that times are constantly changing and adapt to what the present holds so that we can provide the best quality of teaching. Teachers should learn to use technology and work with it instead of having technology work against them. Traditions should not be thrown out all together, that is not what I am saying. But I believe that teachers should find a way to incorporate traditional methods with technological methods.
Response to "EXPLORE: MUST View Videos"
Let me start out by saying that wow! this video was so mind blowing with all the facts. I really like the music it kept me entertained and motivated to keep watching because it was so up beat and I like the fact that you have to read the facts instead of someone reading them or telling them. Reading through out the video kept me attentive and engaged in wanting to know more. It's amazing how the social media following grew in such a short amount of time but technology has the power to reach a large population in a non difficult way. Technology makes situations more convenient and we have access to performing more actions easier than in the times before. For example, if I am at the mall and I see something at a store that I would really like to buy but it happens to be too expensive, I can just pull my smartphone out, look up the item and see if I can order it for a lot less money. In the past, before we had smartphones I wouldn't of been able to do that. I would have had to wait until I got home. This video was very interesting, colorful and very informative.
Response to Did You Know Shift Happens
This was a mind blowing video as well. Very informative but unlike the previous one, this one had a more negative perspective on the outcome of technological expansion. At least that is the vibe that I received from watching it. It is a shame that the percentage of honors students in China is higher than the whole population in the United States. I was not surprised but at the same time it was a bit disappointing. There is no excuse of why we don't have a better education system to help students become more successful. We are a well equipped country with a good standard of living so we have to develop better ways of instruction and we can do that using technology. I also found it interesting that we are preparing students for jobs that don't exist yet. It is scary to think about how fast things are moving now a days. People are so accustomed to change and in one way it is good because it wont hold the person back from reaching their goals but in another way I think it's so bad to have change happen constantly because we don't always need to fix something that is not broken. Sometimes it is more beneficial to leave things the way they are.
Response to A Vision of K-12 Students Today
This video basically shows students supporting and accepting the fact that we live in a technological modern world and they want to work with everything that technology has to offer. Technology allows you to be more hands on with teaching so I don't understand why teachers would not even consider it. I understand that some people are stuck in their old ways but they have to understand that times are constantly moving and we are living in an era where change is at it's highest form. We have to learn to keep an open mind and keep up with our times.
Response to RSA Animate
This video explained multiple problems that we have with our education system. It's important to understand our problems so that we learn how to correct them without creating new problems along the way. I like that it pointed out the fact that getting a degree is not guaranteed anymore and I also appreciate the fact that he acknowledged that the type of educational structure we have is being used in the wrong time period. I agree with the majority of the information presented in this video. The way the system is set up is discouraging the students from wanting to continue with education or even staying engaged in class. Pursuing their goals are becoming more difficult to achieve because they have no motivation to continue. We have to create better more diverse learning strategies so that we can accommodate different types of learners and technology can aid us to do that.
Response to Do Schools Kill Creativity?
Thank you!!! I always say that creativity is a huge key! to having successful lesson plans. I really like the part in the video where he states that creativity is just as important as literacy and we should treat it with the same status. The more creative we become, the more entertained our students will become, the more engaged they will be in our classrooms ans them more engaged, the more they will remember. It is a domino affect that will eventually lead these students to developing effective life long skills that will lead them to discovering better opportunities. As a teacher I want to include creative fun assessments in all of my lesson plans, I do not want to give out only tests. I don't like tests and I don't believe that it should be the main way of assessing students. Tests are unfair. The host in this TED talk has a great sense of humor and having a sense of humor in class is important as well because it is easier to remember and understand good points when you are laughing and having a good time.
Response to How to Escape Education's Death Valley
This video links American culture to the issues we are experiencing with our education system. America spends a lot of money probably more money than most countries on education but it is all going in the wrong places. Humans are naturally diverse and that means we learn differently so we can't use the same strategies all the time. We cannot expect the same curriculum to work for every single kind of learner. So we have to come up a better plan of using our funds on programs that will embrace diversity, curiosity and creativity. We also have to remember that teaching is an important profession and not looked down upon simply because of the financial reasons. Teachers stimulate minds & facilitate learning and prepare the generations for becoming productive members of our society.
Hey Claudia,
ReplyDeleteNice work here!
I just wanted to respond to your thoughts about the "Learning to Change Changing to Learn" video.
I totally agree with you. Students are going to be using the Internet and social media, and so we need to teach them how to be thoughtful users of this technology.
The Internet is a powerful resource, but it's a problematic one, especially when you're young and you don't necessary have the knowledge or skills to not get hoodwinked by the tons of websites online.
That's where we as teachers step in. We have to make them well-informed users of this technology so they can be responsible and successful when using it.
